Fruit is one of the healthiest food groups to eat as we’ve all been told this since we could remember. It’s recommended to eat at least 5 servings of fruit everyday as their health benefits are so great for many reasons.  Each fruit has it’s own unique benefit and a mix of fruits is the best way to go.  Plus, fresh fruit is so naturally delicious – with no preservatives or added ingredients – that it’s enjoyed by most everyone!



It is believed fruits began to be harvested around the world over 11,000 years ago. Before that time, fruits were generally picked from trees in the forest or wherever they were found. Over time, farmers began to experiment with cultivating techniques which gave rise to all the different types of fruit we know today.  Heck – there are probably many other kinds of fruit that have yet to be discovered!

A fruit is formed from the ripened ovary of a flowering plant. They are typically sweet or sour in taste and picked only after they have ripened for maximum flavor and nutritious value. The most popular sweet fruits we all are very familiar with are fruits like apple, banana, mango, and orange where lemon, lime and grapefruit are considered a citrus fruit and enjoyed for their bitter/sour flavors.  Raisins and prunes are enjoyed after they are dried and get their distinct look and flavor as a result.

Several health benefits of fruit:

  • Fruit contains 80% water and since the human body is mostly water and needs ample amounts of water to survive, the body gets both a large amount of vitamins and water from fruit consumption.
  • Junk food is becoming more and more prominent in our society, so indulging in a balanced diet high in fruits can counter some of the negative effects of that fast food hamburger you ate for lunch.
  • Fruits are the ultimate stimulating factor for your brain. They’ve been nicknamed ‘brain fuel’ and that if you want to enhance the power of your memory, fruits should be a staple in your diet.
  • Fiber, fiber and more fiber – no other food delivers the high concentrated amount of fiber everyone’s body demands. This directly assists in fighting corpulence, high blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease.

All in all, fruit makes a person feel better. You must have heard that if one is sad or depressed, give him a glass of fresh fruit juice or simply provide nicely cut fresh fruits and it’s not uncommon to see a change in mood.
